What is a
life worth?
Learning to deal safely with aggressive physical behaviour protects your staff, your
clients and your organisation's reputation.
|
 |
Carers and their clients sometimes come into
conflict...
What value do you place on the safety of your staff, your clients and your organisation's good
name? If you think that they are very valuable indeed, then you need to invest now in Protectics
Breakaway products or training.
Physical injury and psychological trauma to both carers and clients needs to be avoided.
However it is not enough to simply have a policy statement regarding physical intervention, your organisation
must train all 'client facing staff' in the Protectics system of Breakaway Training.
Like it says 'on the label' Breakaway Training teaches your staff
how to avoid or how to 'break away' from an assault. The important thing is to try and ensure that
neither the carer nor the client is hurt and that whenever possible, mutual respect is also
maintained. Breakaway skills training also improves staff confidence and this confidence often
results in a reduction of aggression and aggressive behaviour towards staff.
Training is carefully designed to let staff
maintain their personal safety whilst also protecting your clients. To find out more, call 01452 751

obligation -- we will be happy to give you more information regarding our on-site training programs

What
is Breakaway Training?
A system based on sound physical and psychological principles that is used when a 'client'
poses challenging behaviour.
Behaviour could be a grab or a pinch or a punch or a kick or a variety of other
'challenges'.
The key factor that differentiates Breakaway Training from other interventions is that the
safety of both the carer and the client is considered.
Breakaway training is NOT a martial art (although some principles and techniques may also
be found in some martial arts). A martial art is aimed at defeating an opponent. This is
NOT the case with Breakaway Training. There is NOT an opponent, instead there is a client
whom you wish to safeguard. Martial arts require (without exception) years and years of
rigorous and dedicated training in order to achieve a high level of proficiency. Breakaway
Training is based on a few simple and naturally intuitive movements that can be learnt
within one day.
|
Is Breakaway Training safe?
The answer that most training organisations give is that Breakaway Training is the
safest available response to challenging behaviour. Where Protectics differs is that we
unequivocally state that "No physical intervention, even so called 'safe-holding' can
ever be completely safe." That is why proper and effective training that stresses the
ways in which interventions can be avoided or minimized is so important. No training or
insufficient training (or even training that is too 'Gung-Ho') puts both carers and
clients at risk.
Breakaway training is focused on the following two premises
ONE: The skills must be functional and properly learnt.
TWO: The skills should rarely if ever need to be used.

Who provides the training?

If, like most of the above occupations, your staff
have a 'duty of care' towards their clients then Breakaway Training is obviously of
use. However it may be that your organisation deals with people who can exhibit
challenging physical behaviour without there being a 'duty of care'. What should you
do?
An example would be a shop worker being assaulted by an angry customer. In such a case you
might want to teach your staff Self Preservation techniques (Such as covered by the
Protectics Dealing with Physical Aggression course) or you
might still want them to use Breakaway Techniques as this helps ensure the customers
safety above and beyond the legal requirements.
Also since by definition Breakaway training teaches your staff how to 'break away' from a
dangerous situation it also gives them an increased confidence that will often show itself
in a better attitude towards customer care.
Breakaway training is also useful for staff (medical, security, police or otherwise) who
will be dealing with violence and will be receiving training in personal safety or control
and restraint techniques. There are many situations where restraint is not actually
necessary or desirable and the ability to break away is of benefit to all parties
involved.
